Hidden deep in the hills behind Sandanike Park,Daigo-ji Temple stands quietly overlooking the city of Fukuchiyama. Founded in 1341 to honor Emperor Go-Daigo,this Zen temple has been a place of prayer and reflection for nearly 700 years. Surrounded by nature, it offers a calm space to rest the mindand feel the changing seasons of Kyoto’s countryside.

Daigo-ji was founded by the Zen monk Kokō Kakumyō (1271–1361),who served Emperor Go-Daigo and later received the title Sankō Kokushi (“National Teacher of the Three Lights”). The principal image of worship, Yakushi Nyorai (the Buddha of Healing),was sculpted in 1571 by Hōgen Kōshō, a renowned Buddhist sculptor from Kyoto. The gentle face of Yakushi Nyorai is believed to bring peace to those who visit, healing both body and mind through quiet contemplation.

Visitors are welcome to join zazen (Zen meditation) or shakyo (sutra copying) sessions at the temple. These traditional practices help calm the mind and bring awareness to the present moment. Sessions are held in a quiet hall surrounded by nature. Please make a reservation in advance.
